The
Kenya Forest Conservation Trust
The
Kenya Forest Conservation Trust is registered charitable trust for
the promotion of, and, the strengthening of capacity for the conservation
and sustainable management of forests for the well being of humans
and wildlife. It was registered in August 2004 as a Trust in Kenya.
The
idea to establish the Kenya Forest Conservation Trust (KFCT), originally
the Forest Rescue Trust, was conceived in April 2001 following the
government's proposal to excise (hive off parts of protected forestland)
some 67,185 ha of forestland in the country, announced through the
Kenya Gazette on 17th February 2001. A campaign aimed at soliciting
support from the public and lobbying the government to reverse the
decision was launched by the KFWG. The campaign involved extensive
advertising, talk shows in television and radio, distribution of
publicity materials, and holding of public talks to enlighten the
public. To meet part of the cost of the campaigns, KFWG set up a
Forest Rescue Trust.
Board
of Trustees
The
board of trustees is made up of Quentin Luke (Chairman), Lewi Owendo
(treasurer), Ali Kaka, Gilfred Powys and Melanie Richards.
What
kind of support has been provided by the Trust?
Since
its inception, the Trust has received generous donations from the
public, the private sector and NGOs. Most of the activities supported
by the Trust are related to the forest excision campaigns. These
include the following; petition signature collection, public forums,
lobbying of decision makers (legislators), awareness creation through
advertising, distribution of forest excision leaflets, hosting of
a website on the excisions, production and airing of a forest excision
documentary, focused meetings with members of the clergy, and production
and launching of a forest song.
Possible
areas to be funded
The
general feeling has been that the trust supports emerging forest
activities without tying itself to specific activities. These activities
will relate to:
.
1. Rehabilitation of water catchment areas
2. Capacity building for Community Forest Associations
3. Encouraging private tree farming
4. Forest monitoring activities including voluntary patrolling for
illegal activities in the forest
